Cub Scout Pack 160

Oak Hill, Virginia

Hiking Club News

This year we’re trying a new highlighted hike method.  Here’s how it works:  For each two-month period, a hike will be highlighted by the Pack.  If your Den chooses to go to the highlighted hike during that two-month timeframe, the boys who hike will not only get credit towards Hiking Club miles, but will also receive a hike-specific fun patch from the Pack for their brag vests or scrapbooks.

How the club works:

Frying Pan Park West Ox Road, Herndon

Distance:  1.75 miles

Surface:  narrow nature path

Fees:  Free parking & entry

Amenities:  Restrooms in out building next near parking and country store.

November/December Highlighted Hike

How long/difficult is this hikePaths at this location can be narrow and have rocks, branches, and leaves covering the trail, and there are some ups and downs on slight inclines, but it is not strenuous.  If your den goes near the creek, please be aware there are only very FEW places to cross in which feet won’t get wet!  Hikers following the Nature Trail (with RED blaze markers, which are sometimes hard to spot) will hike 1 mile on the path itself; adding on the distance between the starting and ending points of this path bring it up to 1.75 miles to be awarded to any scout who does that hike.  If your den takes a different path, please let Barbara Oswalt know so we can determine the distance hiked based on the park’s trail map.  Park trail maps may be found at the Visitor’s Center, in the store, and at the kiosk by the gazebo next to the parking lot.

Miles by Den

Frying Pan Park also offers a Junior Naturalist program (aimed at ages 3-8, borrow a program backpack from the Country Store and follow instructions at six stops along the RED trail) and Junior Ranger program (complete booklet activities centered around the farm and animals), both of which have a badge that you can purchase at the Country Store upon completion.  These badges are NOT part of what Pack 160 will provide, but you should be aware that the activities are available to you if you so choose.

Amenities/Fees:  There is a restroom building located next to the parking lot.  There are a playground and country store located near the restrooms as well.  Additional restrooms are to be found in the Equestrian Arena and the Visitor’s Center.  There is no parking or entrance fee for the farm buildings or the hiking paths.

Where it’s located:  Frying Pan Park is located a couple miles north of Oak Hill Elementary on West Ox Road.

Unfortunately, letterboxes were removed from this location in early November.  The Highlighted Hike scheduled for January/February will hopefully provide an opportunity to try letterboxing.

This Fun Patch will be awarded at the January Pack meeting to Pack 160 scouts who do this hike during the November or December.  Of course your den would enjoy hiking this hike at any time of the year if you don’t get to it during the highlighted timeframe.
